On March 5, 2025, the Safavi Impact Institute, in cooperation with the Vienna Chamber of Commerce (WKO), hosted a hands-on workshop for Ukrainian women interested in starting their own businesses in Austria. The strong interest in the topic underscored the need for guidance and support on the road to self-employment.
Ilona Wurzinger from WKO provided an in-depth overview of key aspects of founding a business, including choosing the right legal structure (sole proprietorship, OG, KG, GmbH), obtaining the necessary trade licenses, and understanding relevant legal and bureaucratic processes. Particular attention was given to social security, VAT regulations, and the small business regulations. Practical examples helped illustrate how income-expenditure accounting works and what tax obligations entrepreneurs can expect.
Another focus of the workshop was on targeted support programs designed to assist women as they start their businesses. The experts explained how initiatives like the "New Business Support Program" (NeuFöG) help reduce initial financial burdens such as fees and charges. Additional resources such as the minimum revenue calculator, financial planning services, and individual consultations offered by the WKO were also introduced.
The event fostered an open and engaging atmosphere, with participants eagerly using the opportunity to ask questions and discuss their personal challenges. The supportive setting helped many women overcome initial fears and begin planning concrete next steps. The workshop clearly demonstrated how essential access to tailored support and practical information is for successfully launching a business.
